Here’s what you need to know about follower limits, including the number of direct messages you can send, the maximum API requests you can make, and more.
Twitter Daily Update Limits
You can publish up to 2,400 updates to your Twitter account per day from all devices combined (web, cellphone, and other methods). When you surpass this number in a 24-hour period, you can’t make additional updates until the time period passes.
Twitter Daily Direct Message Limits
Twitter limits direct messages to 1,000 total per day on all devices. When your reach your limit, ask people to send messages to your email account as an alternative to Twitter DMs.
Twitter Daily API Request Limits
You can only make up to 150 API (application programming interface) requests to Twitter per hour. An API request is counted each time you refresh your Twitter page. In other words, an API request is counted each time you perform a function on Twitter. There’s no way to keep track of your API requests, and most Twitter users are unlikely to reach the per-hour limit (third-party Twitter application developers and power business users are the audiences most likely to be affected by this). However, you can use TweetDeck to keep track of your Twitter API requests if you want to do so.
Twitter Follower Limits
You can follow up to 400 people on Twitter per day. You can follow up to 5,000 people total on Twitter without any problems. Twitter following limits are based on the ratio of the number of people you follow to the number of people who follow you. The limits vary based on that ratio. There’s no set ratio to guide you, so the best course of action, once you follow 5,000 people, is to increase the number of people who follow you.
